Early Life and Education
Born Phyllis Ada Driver in 1917 in Lima, Ohio, she was the daughter of an insurance agent. She attended Lima Central Catholic High School and Lima Senior High School before enrolling at Bluffton University. She initially studied piano at the Sherwood Community Music School in Chicago, though she transitioned to literature, history, psychology, and philosophy studies before leaving university.

Before achieving national prominence, Diller worked as an advertising copywriter and a woman's editor at a newspaper. In 1952, she moved into broadcasting, working at KROW radio in Oakland, where she recorded the series Phyllis Dillis, the Homely Friendmaker. She later served as director of promotion and marketing at KSFO radio in San Francisco. Her stand-up act, developed while working in a male-dominated circuit, utilized props and satire to spoof classical music and societal expectations.
Television and Film Career
Diller gained national attention following a 1958 appearance on the quiz show You Bet Your Life, hosted by Groucho Marx, and subsequent bookings on The Ed Sullivan Show. Her filmography includes a role in the 1961 film Splendor in the Grass and several features alongside Bob Hope, such as Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! and Eight on the Lam. She also appeared in numerous television series, including Night Gallery, The Love Boat, and 11 seasons of The Bold and the Beautiful. Her voice work includes roles in A Bug's Life, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and Family Guy.
