Early Career and Television
Born in 1957 in Bristol, Lloyd spent her early years in Nempnett Thrubwell, Somerset, and later attended the University of Birmingham. Following her graduation in 1979, she spent five years within the BBC Television Drama department. In 1985, she secured an Arts Council of Great Britain bursary, which allowed her to train at the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. Her early theatrical appointments included roles at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham, and the Bristol Old Vic.

Lloyd expanded into opera after catching the attention of Nicholas Payne. Her successful debut led to a series of productions including La Boheme, Albert Herring, and Peter Grimes for Opera North, alongside works for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and English National Opera. Her stage career in theatre encompassed productions at the Royal Court, the Royal National Theatre, and the Donmar Warehouse. Notable works include Hysteria, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and Mary Stuart, the latter of which transferred to Broadway.
Film and Later Productions
Her feature film debut, Mamma Mia!, achieved massive commercial success, followed by the 2011 biographical drama The Iron Lady, which earned Meryl Streep an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 2020, her film Herself premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Beyond cinema, she directed a Shakespeare trilogy consisting of Julius Caesar, Henry IV, and The Tempest, which played in both London and New York between 2012 and 2017.
