Pavol Peter Gojdič, a Slovak Greek Catholic bishop, received international recognition for his efforts to protect Jewish lives during the Holocaust. Throughout his tenure as the Eparch of Prešov, he challenged discriminatory policies under the Collaborationist Hlinka Party and subsequently faced intense persecution by the Communist regime, eventually dying as a prisoner of conscience in 1960.
Early Ecclesiastical Path
Born in 1888 in Ruské Pekľany, Gojdič followed his father into the priesthood. Ordained on 27 August 1911, he initially served as an assistant parish priest. Seeking a more ascetic life, he entered St. Nicholas Monastery in 1922 and joined the Basilian order. His administrative talents were soon utilized by the church; he was appointed apostolic administrator of the Eparchy of Prešov in 1926 and reached the rank of titular bishop in 1927.

Take the IQ test →Opposition to Holocaust Policies
As Bishop of Prešov, Gojdič emerged as a vocal critic of the state-sanctioned persecution of the Jewish population. In 1939, he formally opposed the government's discriminatory definitions regarding Jewish status. By 1942, he directly petitioned Vatican diplomat Giuseppe Burzio to exert pressure on President Jozef Tiso, suggesting excommunication for Tiso's complicity in the Holocaust. His diocese facilitated the rescue of approximately 1,500 individuals, often through organized religious conversions.
Resistance to Communism
Following the 1948 Czechoslovak coup d'état, the Communist state sought to dissolve the Greek Catholic Church and force its members to submit to Russian Orthodoxy. Gojdič rejected these demands despite threats of violence and imprisonment. He was arrested by the StB on 28 April 1950. In a 1951 trial for high treason, the state sentenced him to life imprisonment. He continued to lead services in secret while detained, eventually dying at Leopoldov Prison.
