Pavel Vinogradov: The Engineer Who Kept Coming Back

At 59 years old, floating outside the International Space Station on April 19, 2013, Pavel Vinogradov became the oldest human being ever to perform a spacewalk — his seventh excursion in a career that stretched across sixteen years and three separate missions, on two different space stations, under two different flags of program leadership. An Engineer Before He Was a Cosmonaut

Pavel Vladimirovich Vinogradov was born August 31, 1953, in Magadan, in the Soviet Union's far northeast, and trained not as a military pilot but as an engineer, graduating from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1977. He spent the years immediately after graduation, from 1977 to 1983, developing automated interactive design systems for recoverable vehicles, then joined RSC Energia's Head Design Bureau in 1983 — the organization behind the Soyuz and, later, Buran spacecraft programs. There he worked on flight-procedure verification for Soyuz-TM missions and for the Buran space shuttle, helped build automated crew-training systems, and supported launch preparations for multiple spacecraft and for the Energia heavy-lift rocket. That decade-plus of hands-on design and mission-support work gave him a technical fluency with spacecraft systems that few pilot-track cosmonauts could match.

A Late Selection and a Grounded First Assignment

Vinogradov was selected for cosmonaut training relatively late by Soviet-era standards, on March 3, 1992, as the country's space program was being reorganized after the Soviet collapse. He completed general space training through February 1994 and advanced test-cosmonaut training through February 1995, then served as backup flight engineer for Soyuz TM-22 before an assigned Soyuz TM-24 crew, including Vinogradov, was grounded — a career setback that delayed his first flight by years.

Fixing a Damaged Space Station on His First Flight

Vinogradov finally launched on August 5, 1997, as flight engineer aboard Soyuz TM-26 with veteran cosmonaut Anatoly Solovyev, docking with the Mir space station two days later. He arrived at a station in genuine crisis: Mir's Spektr module had been severely damaged in a collision with a resupply craft weeks earlier, and Vinogradov and Solovyev spent the mission repairing power cables and harness connectors inside the wrecked module, restoring much of the station's lost electrical power, and maintaining its oxygen generators. The repair work required five spacewalks between August 1997 and January 1998, ranging from roughly three to six-and-a-half hours each — dangerous, technically exacting work performed on a station that had nearly been abandoned after the collision. Vinogradov returned to Earth on February 19, 1998, after 197 days, 17 hours, and 34 minutes in space.

Command of the International Space Station, Twice

Eight years later, Vinogradov returned to orbit as commander of ISS Expedition 13, launching aboard Soyuz TMA-8 on March 29, 2006, alongside NASA astronaut Jeffrey Williams. The crew docked on March 31 and went on to host two visiting Space Shuttle missions, Discovery and Atlantis, during a stay that ran until September 28, 2006 — 182 days, 23 hours, and 44 minutes in space. On June 2, 2006, Vinogradov performed his sixth career spacewalk with Williams, a six-hour, 31-minute excursion making repairs and collecting experiments along the station's exterior.

His third and final flight, in 2013, spanned the combined Expeditions 35 and 36, launching in March and returning that September. He assumed command of the ISS on May 12, 2013, becoming station commander for the second time in his career. It was during this mission, on April 19, 2013, that he and Romanenko performed the spacewalk that made Vinogradov the oldest person ever to walk in space, installing the Obstanovka experiment to measure charged particles interacting with station materials, retrieving a Biorisk canister, and preparing the outpost for an incoming robotic cargo delivery — though a 6.5-pound materials-exposure panel got away from the pair during retrieval and was lost. Across his three missions and seven spacewalks, Vinogradov logged 38 hours and 25 minutes of cumulative EVA time.

Vinogradov is married to Irina Valentinovna Vinogradova, née Zakharova, and has one child. He has cited interests in aviation and cosmonautics history, astronomy, and sport games. Russia recognized his career with the title Hero of the Russian Federation.
