January 2004 marked the formal induction of Paweł Mąciwoda into the Scorpions, establishing him as the German hard rock ensemble’s longest-tenured bassist. Born in Wieliczka, Poland, in 1967, Mąciwoda developed his technical proficiency through diverse projects before securing his place within the international rock circuit. His career remains active as he continues to engage in global musical collaborations.
Early Career and Jazz Roots
Mąciwoda began his semi-professional bass career at age 15. Due to his youth, peers within the rock and roll circuit assigned him the nickname Baby. During his formative years in Kraków, he performed with avant-garde rock bands Düpą and Püdelsi. Simultaneously, he toured Europe with the jazz fusion group Little Egoists and released a solo record titled Radio Wieliczka. His early professional credentials also include membership in the jazz-rock outfit Walk Away, led by violinist Michał Urbaniak and vocalist Urszula Dudziak, which resulted in the recording of the album Magic Lady.

Take the IQ test →Transition to the Scorpions
In 2003, Mąciwoda joined the Scorpions for sessions, eventually obtaining official member status the following January. His duration with the band has exceeded the nineteen-year tenure previously held by Francis Buchholz. This position serves as the primary outlet for his work in rock music, representing a shift from his early focus on jazz and avant-garde genres.
Solo Projects and Collaborations
Beyond his work with the Scorpions, Mąciwoda participated in the 2009 production of the WU-HAE album Opera Nowohucka, working with artists including Maciej Maleńczuk, Grzegorz Markowski, and Olaf Deriglasoff. In 2011, he co-founded the project Stirwater with Efrem Wilder. The name refers to the English translation of his surname. The pair recorded a single, Water Water, which achieved the number two position on the Polish radio station Trójka during the summer of 2012. While that specific collaboration concluded, Mąciwoda maintained the Stirwater project, recording with musicians such as Atma Anur from the UK and Florian Hofer from Germany.
