Early Musical Training and Piano
The daughter of Spanish tenor Manuel García and singer Joaquina Sitches, she received instruction in piano and voice from her father. Although she aspired to a career as a professional concert pianist, her mother eventually directed her focus toward singing. She studied composition and harmony under Anton Reicha and maintained close ties to piano virtuosos, frequently performing duets with Frédéric Chopin. Her peers, including Franz Liszt and Ignaz Moscheles, recognized her high level of technical proficiency on the instrument.

After her professional singing debut, she garnered attention for an expansive vocal range spanning from C3 to F6. Her opera debut as Desdemona in Rossini’s Otello occurred in London in 1839. She later became associated with notable roles such as Fidès in Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Le prophète and the title role in Charles Gounod’s Sapho. During her tenure at the Opera in Saint Petersburg between 1843 and 1846, she developed a reputation for her command of Russian repertoire.
Collaborations and Later Career
Her professional network included major figures of the nineteenth century, including Hector Berlioz and George Sand. She performed the mezzo-soprano part in the Tuba mirum at Chopin’s 1849 funeral in Paris. Over time, her work transitioned toward composition and pedagogy. She arranged instrumental works by composers such as Joseph Haydn, Johannes Brahms, and Franz Schubert into songs. In 1870, she was appointed a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
