Paulo Ferreira

Portuguese footballer (born 1979)

Paulo Renato Rebocho Ferreira signed with Chelsea in 2004 for a transfer fee of €20 million, marking the beginning of a nine-season tenure in London. A versatile defender, he spent his career in Portugal and England, accumulating 62 international caps for the Portuguese national team while securing major titles at both the domestic and continental levels.

Early Development and Transition

Born in Cascais on 18 January 1979, Ferreira began his professional trajectory at Estoril in the Segunda Liga. He transitioned to Vitória de Setúbal for the 2000–01 season, where he contributed to the team's promotion to the Primeira Liga. In 2002, he joined Porto under the management of José Mourinho, who shifted his role from right midfielder to right-back.

Success in Portugal and Move to England

During his two-year stint at Porto, Ferreira became a fixture in the starting lineup, helping the club secure back-to-back league championships. He played a key role in the 2003 UEFA Cup final victory over Celtic and the 2004 UEFA Champions League final win against Monaco. Following these achievements, he transferred to Chelsea, joining a squad that soon ended a 50-year wait for the Premier League title.

Longevity at Chelsea

Ferreira represented Chelsea in 217 official matches across nine seasons. Despite facing increased competition for the right-back position from teammates like Juliano Belletti and Branislav Ivanović, he remained a professional presence, winning the 2010 double and the 2012 Champions League. He retired from professional football in May 2013 after his final league appearance against Everton.

International Representation

Ferreira made his debut for the Portugal national team on 7 September 2002. Over his international career, he competed in four major tournaments: UEFA Euro 2004, the 2006 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2008, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He functioned primarily as a right-back, though he occasionally shifted to the opposite flank during his tenure with the Selecção.
