Mapping the topographic landscape of the nineteenth century, Olaf Nikolas Olsen served as both an officer in the Danish army and a technical authority on European cartography. Born in 1794 in Køge, his career bridged military service and precise geographical documentation, eventually leading to his oversight of national ordnance maps within the General Staff of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Military Career and Teaching
Olsen served as military personnel throughout his professional life, balancing his duties with a commitment to education. He provided instruction in the field of cartography at the Royal Cadet School. By 1830, he expanded his teaching responsibilities to include the Army Academy. His progression within the military structure continued steadily; he became a member of the General Staff in 1836. By 1842, he held the rank of Major and served as the head of the staff's topographic department. His final promotion to the rank of colonel occurred in 1848, the year of his death.

Beyond his administrative duties, Olsen focused on the production and publication of numerous maps covering the European continent. Within his capacity at the General Staff, he assumed direct responsibility for the publication of the Danish Ordnance Maps. One of his significant editorial achievements involved the first comprehensive map of Iceland. This project utilized survey data collected by Björn Gunnlaugsson, whose fieldwork in Iceland spanned the years 1831 to 1843.
Awards and Legacy
The Danish government recognized Olsen’s contributions to the military and topographic sciences through state honors. In 1829, he was made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog. Later, in 1840, he received the Decoration of the Cross of Honour of the Dannebrog. Olsen died in Copenhagen in 1848 and was interred at the Garnison Cemetery.
