Born in Reykjavík in 1973, he maintained a professional career as a right back from 1992 until 2015, serving for many years as the captain of the Iceland men's national team.
Early Career and Domestic Success
Stefánsson began his professional development with the Reykjavík-based club Valur. Between 1991 and 1996, he secured five Icelandic championship titles and one Icelandic cup. This initial period established his reputation within the sport before he transitioned to the German Bundesliga, joining LTV Wuppertal under coach Viggó Sigurðsson.

His tenure at SC Magdeburg, managed by Alfreð Gíslason, resulted in a Bundesliga title in 2001 and a Champions League victory in 2002. Moving to the Spanish club BM Ciudad Real in 2003, he achieved significant success, winning the Liga ASOBAL four times and the EHF Champions League in 2006, 2008, and 2009. Later, he played for Rhein-Neckar Löwen, AG København, and the Lekhwiya Handball Team in Doha.
National Team Achievements
Stefánsson made his debut for the Iceland men's national team during the 1995 World Championships. He captained the squad to a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2010 European Championship. He retired from international competition following the 2012 London Olympics, having been named Icelandic Sportsperson of the Year on four occasions: 2002, 2003, 2008, and 2009.
Post-Playing Career
After concluding his professional playing career in 2015, Stefánsson transitioned into coaching. As of March 2022, he serves as an assistant coach for the German club Erlangen. His contributions to Icelandic sport were recognized in 2008 when he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Falcon.
