Olaf Tufte

Norwegian rower (1976–2026)

Olaf Karl Tufte secured his place in rowing history by competing in seven Olympic Games, winning back-to-back gold medals in the men's single scull during the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics. His professional life balanced intensive international athletic competition with his roles as a farmer and a firefighter in his native Norway.

Early Development and International Debut

Born in Tønsberg in 1976, Tufte began rowing at age 17 as supplemental training for motocross. By 1994, he made his international debut at the Junior World Rowing Championships, finishing sixth. In 1995, he earned a silver medal as part of the Norwegian U23 quad scull at the Nations Cup in Holland.

Rise to Olympic Prominence

Tufte made his senior debut at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the coxless four. In 1999, he partnered with Fredrik Bekken in a double scull, resulting in a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Following this success, he transitioned to the single scull, winning his first world title at the 2001 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne and earning the 2001 Norwegian Sportsperson of the Year award. He secured his second world title in 2003 at Milan.

Peak Athletic Achievements

The 2004 Athens Olympics saw Tufte defeat Jueri Jaanson to claim his first Olympic gold. He maintained elite standing throughout the following years, earning a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships. In 2008, he successfully defended his Olympic title in Beijing against rivals Ondrej Synek and Mahe Drysdale, establishing his reputation for performing under pressure in major events.

Later Career and Final Years

After the 2012 London Olympics, Tufte managed a health-related hiatus due to liver disease. He returned to competition and secured a bronze medal in the double sculls at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics alongside Kjetil Borch. He died on 21 July 2026, aged 50.
