Ola Toivonen

Swedish footballer (born 1986)

Ola Toivonen made his professional debut in his hometown of Degerfors, Sweden, before embarking on a seventeen-year career that spanned leagues in the Netherlands, France, England, and Australia. A versatile attacking midfielder and forward, he represented the Swedish national team 64 times and competed in both UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where his team reached the quarter-finals.

Early Career and Domestic Breakthrough

Toivonen began his career with Degerfors IF, assisting the club in its 2005 campaign to maintain its status in the Superettan. Following a move to Örgryte, where the team was relegated from the Allsvenskan, he earned the Årets nykomling award in 2006. In 2007, he signed a four-year deal with Malmö FF for a fee exceeding $1.1 million. While his first season saw him score three goals, his 2008 breakthrough included 14 goals and seven assists across 27 matches, attracting international scouting interest.

European Tenure and PSV Eindhoven

In January 2009, Toivonen joined Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven for a fee estimated between €3.5 million and €4.5 million. He adapted quickly to the Dutch league, scoring 13 goals in his first full season. His performance peaked during the 2010–11 campaign, during which he netted 15 league goals, including a hat trick against ADO Den Haag. He was instrumental in securing the KNVB Cup for the side in 2012. After an injury-hampered 2012–13 season and a contract dispute that sidelined him in 2014, he departed for France.

International Competition and Global Stints

Toivonen represented Sweden internationally between 2007 and 2018, totaling 14 goals. Following his tenure at PSV, he moved to Rennes for €2.5 million in 2014. His time in France included a stint at Toulouse starting in 2016. He also spent the 2015–16 season on loan at Sunderland in the Premier League, debuting against Aston Villa and scoring in a League Cup match against Manchester City. Between 2018 and 2020, he played for Melbourne Victory in Australia, scoring 17 goals in 26 appearances during his first season. He returned to Malmö FF before his retirement in 2022.
