Naim Süleymanoğlu set 51 world records throughout his career as a professional weightlifter, earning the nickname Pocket Hercules for his ability to lift over three times his body weight. Standing only 147 cm tall, he established his dominance in the featherweight division, securing three consecutive Olympic gold medals and seven World Championship titles between 1983 and 1996.
Early Years and Defection
Born in 1967 in Ptichar, Bulgaria, he began his training while the country was under a government program known as the Revival Process. This mandate forced ethnic minorities to adopt Slavic names, and in 1985, he was compelled to compete as Naum Shalamanov. During a trip to the 1986 World Cup Final in Melbourne, he escaped his handlers and sought asylum at the Turkish Embassy in Canberra. Following intervention by Prime Minister Turgut Özal, he arrived in Istanbul via London and legally restored his original name.

To ensure his eligibility for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the Turkish government paid Bulgaria $1.25 million. In Seoul, he performed at an unprecedented level, winning gold by setting world records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total. His final lift of 190 kg remains one of the highest clean-and-jerk-to-body-weight ratios recorded. He defended his Olympic titles in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996, where he engaged in a notable rivalry with Greece's Valerios Leonidis.
Political Pursuits and Later Life
Following his retirement, he sought public office, running as an independent candidate for the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1999 and representing the Nationalist Movement Party in local and general elections in 2002 and 2006. His political bids were unsuccessful. In his later years, he suffered from cirrhosis of the liver and underwent a transplant in October 2017. He passed away on 18 November 2017 in Istanbul and was buried at the Edirnekapı Martyr's Cemetery.
