The acquisition of a majority stake in the pan-European channel Euronews in 2015 marked a significant diversification for Naguib Sawiris, a figure whose commercial interests span telecommunications, mining, and global infrastructure. Born in Faiyum in 1954, he built his career within the family conglomerate, Orascom, before moving into independent investment and political roles.
Development of Orascom
Joining the family firm in 1979, Sawiris concentrated on railway, information technology, and telecommunications. In the late 1990s, the group underwent a structural shift, splitting into distinct entities including Orascom Telecom Holding and Orascom Construction Industries. He steered the growth of Orascom Telecom Holding, later rebranding as Orascom Investment Holding, where he continues to serve as CEO. His telecommunications ventures included purchasing a majority share in the Algerian mobile network Djezzy, which became a primary subsidiary before legal challenges emerged regarding its ownership.

The Algerian government moved to increase its stake in Djezzy in 2008, leading to a prolonged conflict over control. In 2010, the Russian firm VimpelCom acquired Orascom. Sawiris subsequently initiated a $4 billion lawsuit against the Algerian state at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, alleging state interference and harassment. The tribunal dismissed his claim in 2017, following a 2014 resolution where VimpelCom sold a 51 percent stake in the mobile operator to the Algerian National Investment Fund.
Global Infrastructure and Mining
In 2012, Sawiris became chairman of La Mancha Holding, utilizing the firm to acquire and finance mining assets in Africa, Canada, and Côte d'Ivoire. Beyond mining, he launched Ora Developers in 2016, managing a $2.5 billion portfolio that includes the Silver Sands project in Grenada and the Eighteen residential development in Pakistan. In 2024, his firm reached an agreement with the Iraqi government to construct the 61 million square meter Ali Al-Wardi City near Baghdad.
Political and Public Engagement
Sawiris founded the Free Egyptians Party in 2011. His involvement was characterized by internal friction, culminating in his dismissal from the board in 2017 after refusing to appear before the party on allegations of insulting the board of trustees. Outside of formal politics, he gained international attention in 2015 when he offered to purchase an island near Greece or Italy to assist refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict, citing jurisdictional complexities as the primary obstacle to the plan.
