The 2019 Tunisian presidential election campaign saw Nabil Karoui secure second place, marking a significant transition from media entrepreneurship to national politics. Born in Bizerte in 1963, his career spans marketing roles at multinational corporations, the establishment of significant communication firms, and the leadership of a major private television station that reshaped the country’s broadcast environment.
Early Career and Business Foundation
Karoui began his professional life in Southern France, managing sales for Colgate-Palmolive and Henkel. His early experience included a tenure within the North Africa division of the Canal+ Group. In 1996, he established the communications agency KNRG alongside his brother, Ghazi. By 2002, the brothers had launched Karoui & Karoui World, a public relations firm that expanded its footprint across the Middle East and North Africa. Beyond corporate communications, Karoui developed subsidiaries focused on audiovisual production, digital media, and urban advertising.

Take the IQ test →Media Influence and Nessma TV
In 2009, Karoui became the head of Nessma, a private television station. He utilized the channel to advocate for a Pan-Maghreb movement, emphasizing cultural connections through music and regional adaptations of international programming like Star Academy. During the 2010 Tunisian Revolution, the channel provided early coverage of ongoing protests. However, the station faced significant regulatory friction, including a 2019 equipment seizure by the Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication due to licensing disputes and campaign coverage bans.
Entry into Political Arenas
Following the 2011 Tunisian Constituent Assembly election, Karoui collaborated with Beji Caid Essebsi to form Nidaa Tounes, a party designed as a secular counter-movement to the Ennahda Movement. Karoui facilitated strategic meetings and used Nessma to mobilize voter support. After Nidaa Tounes succeeded in the 2014 parliamentary elections, Karoui transitioned to a board member role before departing the party in 2017 following internal disputes.
Heart of Tunisia and Presidential Candidacy
In 2017, Karoui initiated charitable efforts in impoverished areas, which some critics labeled as politically motivated, earning him the nickname 'Nabil Macaroni.' By 2019, he founded the political party Heart of Tunisia. Despite legislative attempts to amend electoral laws in June 2019, which effectively targeted candidates with his profile, he remained eligible to run. He ultimately advanced to the final round of the presidential election, finishing as the runner-up.
