Ariel Investments, a firm managing over 14 billion dollars in assets, appointed Mellody Hobson as its president in 2000. Rising from an intern to the head of the company, she solidified her status in the American financial sector while navigating a career spanning global corporate leadership, media contributions, and high-profile board memberships across several major industries.

Early Development and Academic Foundation

Born in Chicago in 1969, Hobson was the youngest of six children. Her youth was marked by financial instability, an experience that influenced her long-term professional focus on monetary understanding. She attended St. Ignatius College Prep, graduating in 1987 as a first-generation college student. She subsequently enrolled at Princeton University, where she participated in the Cottage Club and graduated in 1991 from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.

Ascent in Financial Services

Following her university graduation, Hobson secured an internship at Ariel Investments in Chicago. The firm operates as one of the largest African American-owned mutual fund and money management companies in the United States. She advanced through the ranks, serving as senior vice president and director of marketing before assuming the presidency. Beyond her executive duties, she served as a long-term contributor for CBS This Morning and Good Morning America and hosted the 2009 ABC broadcast Unbroke: What You Need to Know About Money.

Corporate Governance and Board Roles

Hobson has maintained a significant presence on various corporate boards, including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. She previously served as the chairman of DreamWorks Animation, overseeing its acquisition by NBCUniversal in 2016. In 2018, she became vice chair of Starbucks, and by 2020, she was elected as the company's chair, making her the first Black woman to lead an S&P 500 firm. She transitioned to the role of lead independent director in 2024. Additionally, in 2017, she became the first African-American woman to head The Economic Club of Chicago.

Investment Interests and Philanthropy

Her diversified investment activities include joining an ownership group that acquired the Denver Broncos in 2022 alongside Rob Walton, Greg Penner, Carrie Walton Penner, Condoleezza Rice, and Lewis Hamilton. Hobson and the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation provided the lead gift to establish a residential college at Princeton University in 2020. She also funded the restoration of the film Ghatashraddha through the Film Heritage Foundation.
