Early Career and Collaborations
After his introduction to cinema through his mother, filmmaker Chantal Poupaud, he maintained a long-standing creative relationship with Raúl Ruiz. He appeared in nine additional projects directed by Ruiz, including Treasure Island, Genealogies of a Crime, Time Regained, and Love Torn in a Dream. During his formative years, he also studied at the Lycée Fénelon in Paris.

Poupaud garnered early industry attention for his performances in Jacques Doillon's The 15 Year Old Girl and Laurence Ferreira Barbosa's Normal People Are Nothing Exceptional. Both roles earned him nominations for the César Award for Most Promising Actor. By 1998, he received the Shooting Stars Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

His filmography includes appearances in works by directors such as François Ozon, notably Time to Leave and The Refuge, as well as Eric Rohmer's A Summer's Tale and Arnaud Desplechin's A Christmas Tale. He later co-starred with Suzanne Clément in Xavier Dolan's Laurence Anyways and worked alongside Parker Posey in Zoe Cassavetes' Broken English.
