Melissa Vargas began playing volleyball on the streets of Cienfuegos at age six, eventually joining her school team at eight. A multi-national professional, she holds both Cuban and Turkish citizenship. Since 2023, she has become a central figure in the Turkish national volleyball program, securing multiple international awards and titles throughout her career across several global leagues.
Early Career and Conflict
Born in 1999, Vargas trained with the Cienfuegos team starting at age 12. She participated in Cuban national youth squads before joining Agel Prostějov in the Czech Republic for the 2015–16 season. A shoulder injury prompted her return to Cuba for medical treatment. Displeased with the available care, she sought external options, resulting in a four-year ban from the Cuban national team for alleged indiscipline between 2017 and 2021.

Vargas moved to the Turkish club Fenerbahçe Opet in 2018. Following her tenure with the club, she pursued naturalization in Turkey. On 10 April 2021, the Turkish government approved her citizenship application, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan personally presented her with her identification card. She has maintained a consistent presence with Fenerbahçe, signing a three-year contract renewal on 9 July 2024.
International Success with Turkey
After becoming eligible for the Turkish national team in 2023, Vargas participated in the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League, contributing to a gold medal finish. Her performance earned her MVP and Best Opposite Hitter honors. She repeated these individual awards at the 2023 European Volleyball Championship. She also claimed silver with Turkey at the 2025 FIVB World Championship, where she was designated Best Opposite Hitter.
