Meles Zenawi

Meles Zenawi rose to prominence as a rebel militant commander before transitioning to a long tenure as a national leader. Born in Adwa in 1955, he initially studied at Addis Ababa University, later attending The Open University and Erasmus University Rotterdam. His political career defined the transition of Ethiopia from military rule to a new administrative structure.

Military Involvement and Rise to Power

In 1975, Meles left university to join the Tigray People's Liberation Front, a group opposing the Derg military dictatorship. Originally named Legesse Zenawi Asres, he adopted the name Meles after a fellow student was executed by the government. By 1989, he led the Tigray People's Liberation Front and subsequently headed the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front. Following the conclusion of the Ethiopian Civil War in 1991, he became the President of the Transitional Government of Ethiopia.

Administrative Tenure

Meles served as President of Ethiopia from 1991 to 1995. Following this period, he became the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, holding the position from 1995 until his death in 2012. During his time in office, he served as the chairperson of the Organisation of African Unity from 1995 to 1996 and was a member of the House of People's Representatives of Ethiopia.

Governance and Policy

His administration implemented ethnic federalism, a policy intended to allow ethnic groups to manage their own land and culture. During his presidency, a referendum led to the secession of Eritrea from Ethiopia in 1993. A territorial dispute later sparked a war between the two nations from 1998 to 2000, resulting in significant casualties. In 2009, he received the National Liberation Medal.

Final Years

The 2005 general election saw Meles retain his position as Prime Minister, though the results faced intense opposition and sparked civil unrest in Addis Ababa. His government focused on agricultural reforms and school expansions, though it faced criticism regarding civil liberties and political suppression. Meles Zenawi died in Brussels, Belgium, on 20 August 2012 due to an undisclosed illness.
