Early Education and Musical Foundations
Born in the village of Banoja in 1863, Meliton Balanchivadze pursued formal education at the Tbilisi Theological Seminary between 1877 and 1879. He initiated his professional career as an opera singer at the Tbilisi Opera House in 1880. During this period, he demonstrated an early commitment to regional musical heritage by establishing a Georgian folk ensemble in 1882 and organizing the first public concert of folk music in Tbilisi the following year.

Between 1883 and 1886, Balanchivadze conducted extensive fieldwork across Georgia, documenting native folk songs and instructing local choirs. His technical proficiency expanded significantly during his tenure at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory from 1889 to 1895, where he studied under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Following his graduation, he spent two decades touring the Russian Empire to perform and promote Georgian folk music.
Post-Revolutionary Contributions
Following the 1917 Bolshevik coup, Balanchivadze returned to his native Georgia. He focused his remaining years on pedagogy and the composition of choral works, masses, and church services. His dedication to his craft and his role in developing a national musical identity were recognized by the Soviet authorities. In 1933, he was named a People's Artist of the Georgian SSR, and in 1937, he received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He died in 1937 and was buried in Kutaisi.
