Marko Pogačnik designed the official coat of arms for the Republic of Slovenia in 1991, following his graduation from the Academy of Arts in Ljubljana in 1967. Early Career and OHO
During the 1960s, Pogačnik became a foundational figure in the neo-avantgarde movement known as OHO. Alongside collaborators Tomaž Šalamun and Slavoj Žižek, he explored conceptual approaches that challenged established artistic conventions. This period of his career helped define his early trajectory as an artist operating within the evolving intellectual framework of contemporary Slovenian society.

Beginning in the 1980s, his artistic practice shifted toward a holistic philosophy. He developed a technical process described as lithopuncture, which involves placing pillars at specific landscape points to facilitate environmental healing. This methodology remains a central element of his work, reflecting an integration of aesthetic form and perceived elemental intelligence in nature.
Public Commissions and Installations
Pogačnik resides and maintains his studio in the village of Šempas, situated in the lower Vipava Valley. His work is visible in various public spaces, including a monument marking the millennium of the first mention of Gorica and Solkan in the municipal territory of Nova Gorica. In Ljubljana, his 2008 installation, Hologram of Europe, consists of birch trees and stone monuments placed at the intersection of Tivolska cesta and Slovenska cesta.
Political and Philosophical Involvement
His professional life includes engagement with civic and social initiatives. In 2006, he aligned with the Movement for Justice and Development, an organization led by then-President Janez Drnovšek. Furthermore, he established the Lifenet movement in 1998 alongside his daughter, Ana. He also authored Nature Spirits and Elemental Beings, published by Findhorn Press in 1996.
