Early Performance Experiments
During the 1970s, Abramović explored the relationship between ritual and the body. In her 1973 debut in Edinburgh, Rhythm 10, she performed the knife game while recording the sounds of her own injuries to examine historical and present-time repetition. This focus on physical thresholds continued with Rhythm 5, where she lost consciousness within a burning pentagram, and Rhythm 2, which utilized medical drugs to observe involuntary muscle contractions.
