Early Development and Junior Circuit
Raised in Medjugorje, Čilić began playing tennis in 1991 when the town first built courts. His father, Zdenko, encouraged his sons Vinko, Goran, Marin, and Mile to pursue athletics. At 15, on the recommendation of Goran Ivanišević, Čilić moved to San Remo, Italy, to train under coach Bob Brett. His junior career flourished in 2005 with a French Open title in Boys' singles, where he defeated Andy Murray. He ended that year ranked number two globally on the junior circuit.
