Born to Tudor Călărașu and Joița Preda, he grew up in a large rural family facing significant financial instability. After completing his primary education in 1937, he moved across Romania to pursue further studies in Abrud, Cristur-Odorhei, and eventually Bucharest, often relying on the intervention of teachers and librarians to secure books and tuition.

Following a period of extreme material hardship in Bucharest during the winter of 1941, Preda secured a position as a proofreader for the newspaper Timpul. In April 1942, he made his literary debut with the sketch Părlitu. Throughout the 1940s, he published several stories, including Salcâmul, Calul, and Noaptea, establishing his presence within the Romanian literary scene despite the era's volatile political climate.
Literary Legacy and Political Context
Preda maintained a complex relationship with the socialist regime, holding high distinctions while navigating state censorship. His final novel, Cel mai iubit dintre pământeni, released shortly before his death in 1980, presented a sharp critique of early Romanian communism. His work, which includes the novel Moromeții and the semi-autobiographical Viața ca o pradă, remains a standard for the period's literature.
