Marina Silva

Maria Osmarina Marina da Silva Vaz de Lima, known as Marina Silva, rose from a childhood in an Acre rubber-tapper community to serve as a pivotal figure in Brazilian government. Her trajectory spans roles as a trade unionist, a long-term senator for Acre, and a three-time appointee to the position of national environment minister across two decades.

Early Development and Activism

Born in 1958 near Rio Branco, Silva spent her youth on the Bagaço rubber plantation. She moved to the state capital at age 16, where she transitioned from housemaid work to formal education, ultimately earning a bachelor's degree from the Universidade Federal do Acre. In 1984, she co-founded her first workers' union.

Legislative and Ministerial Tenure

In 1988, she won election as a councillor in Rio Branco. By 1995, she began a 16-year term as a senator for Acre. Appointed Minister of the Environment in 2003, she oversaw a period where deforestation in the Legal Amazon declined by 59% between 2004 and 2007. Her strategy involved an integrated policy framework and territorial zoning. She held this cabinet post until 2008, despite increasing friction regarding large-scale infrastructure projects such as the São Francisco River Diversion.

Political Realignment and Candidacies

Silva left the Workers' Party in 2009, citing dissatisfaction with environmental policy, and joined the Green Party. She mounted unsuccessful presidential campaigns in 2010, 2014, and 2018. In 2014, following the death of Eduardo Campos in a plane crash, she assumed the lead ticket for the Socialist Party. She eventually helped establish the Sustainability Network. As of 2023, she serves as a federal deputy for São Paulo and resumed her role as Minister of the Environment.
