Ascending the throne in 1730 following a violent insurrection, Mahmud I served as the sultan of the Ottoman Empire for twenty-four years. His tenure was defined by the suppression of internal dissent, significant military engagements in Persia and Europe, and an eventual delegation of administrative duties to his viziers while he pursued personal interests in poetry and architectural patronage.
Accession and Domestic Control
Born in 1696 at Edirne Palace to Mustafa II and Saliha Sultan, Mahmud spent twenty-seven years confined in the Kafes before his elevation to the throne. His reign began amidst the chaos of a rebellion that forced the abdication of his uncle, Ahmed III. After securing power, Mahmud asserted control by executing or exiling thousands of suspected conspirators. He systematically dismantled the influence of the insurgents who had initially propelled him to power, culminating in the execution of their leader in 1731.

Public Works and Religious Policy
Mahmud I oversaw significant urban developments in Istanbul, including the 1740 construction of the Cağaloğlu Bath. He established three libraries, the first being located within the courtyard of the Hagia Sophia Mosque, where he donated 4,000 volumes. Beyond infrastructure, he addressed social and religious matters, notably outlawing Freemasonry in 1748, a decision influenced by the position of Pope Clement XII regarding the organization's alignment with atheism.
