In March 2003, Abbas was appointed the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority. His tenure was defined by internal friction regarding power distribution, specifically with Yasser Arafat, and efforts to manage relations with militant groups. Citing a lack of support from international partners and internal political challenges, he resigned from the position in September 2003.
Presidency and Leadership Roles
Following the death of Yasser Arafat, Abbas assumed the presidency of the Palestinian National Authority in 2005. His leadership has seen multiple titles and organizational roles, including serving as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization since 2004 and as the president of the State of Palestine starting in 2008.
