Formative years and academic pursuit

Born on 21 December 1984 in Karachi, Mahira Hafeez Khan grew up in a Muhajir family. She attended Foundation Public School before relocating to California at age seventeen. While pursuing higher education at Santa Monica College and subsequently the University of Southern California, she supported herself by working as a retail cashier. She left her studies in English literature after one year to return to Pakistan and seek professional opportunities in the arts.

Television and early visibility

Khan began her public career in 2006 as a video jockey at MTV Pakistan, where she hosted the daily program Most Wanted. By 2008, she transitioned to AAG TV for the show Weekend with Mahira. Her rise to national prominence occurred in 2011 with the television serial Humsafar, an adaptation of a novel by Farhat Ishtiaq. Her portrayal of Khirad Ehsan secured her a Lux Style Award for Best Television Actress, establishing her as a versatile performer in romantic and psychological dramas, including Shehr-e-Zaat and Sadqay Tumhare.

Expansion into cinema

Following the success of Bol, Khan established herself as a consistent draw for cinema audiences. She starred in the 2015 romantic drama Bin Roye and the 2016 musical Ho Mann Jahaan, both of which became high-grossing regional productions. In 2017, she expanded her career to the Indian film industry with a role in the crime thriller Raees. Later that year, she returned to Pakistani cinema with a lead performance in Shoaib Mansoor’s Verna. Her work continued through 2022 with roles in action films including Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad and The Legend of Maula Jatt.

Advocacy and professional recognition

Beyond her screen career, Khan has engaged in humanitarian work related to refugee crises. In 2019, she began collaborating with UNICEF and accepted an appointment as a national and global Goodwill Ambassador specifically focused on Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan. She has received numerous industry honors for her acting, including seven Lux Style Awards and eight Hum Awards, and was named to the BBC 100 Women list in 2020.
