Early Development and Domestic Foundation
Jayawardene received his initial training at the Lionel Coaching Clinic, operated by the Nondescripts Cricket Club. While he began his schoolboy career as a fast bowler, he eventually transitioned to the top order. By 1994, he led the Nalanda College first XI and earned recognition as a runner-up for the best schoolboy cricketer award. In 1995, he began his long-standing association with the Sinhalese Sports Club, and he later appeared for the Wayamba cricket team.

The 69th Sri Lankan Test cap was earned during a 1997 debut against India, where Jayawardene contributed to a team total of 952/6. His ODI debut followed in January 1998 against Zimbabwe, where he hit the winning run. He became the first Sri Lankan to surpass 10,000 Test runs and the second to achieve this milestone in ODIs. In 2006, he and Kumar Sangakkara set a world record by scoring 624 runs in a single partnership against South Africa, marking the highest stand in first-class cricket history.
Leadership and Tactical Contributions
Appointed to lead the national side, Jayawardene directed the team to a 2008 Asia Cup victory and captained the squad during the 2006 England tour, where he secured a 5–0 ODI series win. His defensive capabilities were equally notable; a 2005 ESPNcricinfo report identified him as the fielder with the most run-outs in ODIs since the 1999 tournament. In 2010, he became the first Sri Lankan to record a century in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Post-Playing Career and Recognition
Following his retirement from international play, Jayawardene transitioned into media and administration. He worked as a television commentator during the 2016 England versus Sri Lanka Test at Headingley.
