Liu Yandong

Chinese politician

The 2013 appointment of Liu Yandong as Vice Premier of the State Council placed her among the highest-ranked female politicians in the history of the People's Republic of China. A chemist by training and an experienced party administrator, she occupied a seat on the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party for a decade, influencing national health, education, and sports policy.

Early Education and Industrial Work

Born in Huai'an District in November 1945, Liu attended Tsinghua University starting in 1964. She completed her studies in chemistry in 1970, during the Cultural Revolution. Her initial professional experience involved working at a chemical production plant located in Tangshan. This industrial role lasted until 1980, when she transitioned into administrative functions within the party structure in Beijing.

Communist Youth League and Administrative Roles

Beginning in 1982, Liu spent nine years associated with the Communist Youth League. During this period, she held the position of Chairwoman of the All-China Youth Federation. She later moved to the United Front Work Department, where she served as deputy secretary-general starting in 1991. While working in these capacities, she pursued advanced academic credentials, obtaining a master's degree from Renmin University of China between 1990 and 1994, followed by a doctorate from Jilin University earned between 1994 and 1998.

Ascent to the Politburo

In 2002, Liu assumed leadership of the United Front Work Department, a role she maintained until 2007. That same year, she attained a seat on the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, remaining a member until 2017. Her political responsibilities expanded in 2008 when she was elected State Councilor. She further served as deputy chair of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, receiving the Silver Olympic Order that year.

Service as Vice Premier

In 2013, Liu was appointed Vice Premier in the Li Keqiang government, a role she held until 2018. As Vice Premier, she managed diverse portfolios, including healthcare reform, education, and sports. Her tenure saw her become the first woman since Deng Yingchao to serve consecutive terms on the Politburo. Beyond her domestic government work, she was recognized internationally, receiving the Order of Friendship and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Stony Brook University in 2009.
