Liu Shiwen

Liu Shiwen secured the 2019 World Championship title, punctuating a career defined by sustained dominance in elite table tennis. Born in 1991 in Fushun, China, she established herself as a five-time World Cup champion and a four-time Asian Cup winner, consistently maintaining top-tier ITTF world rankings across more than a decade of international competition.

Professional Rankings and Consistency

Throughout her career, Liu demonstrated longevity at the pinnacle of the sport. She held the ITTF No. 1 ranking for nine consecutive months in 2010, followed by a thirteen-month streak from 2013 to 2014, and another eleven-month tenure between 2015 and 2016. From early 2012 to mid-2017, she remained within the top three positions in the ITTF Women's World rankings.

Technical Equipment

For competitive matches, Liu utilizes a custom-made Butterfly ZLC racket. Her forehand setup features a black DHS Hurricane 3 NEO Blue Sponge measuring 2.1mm at 39.5 degrees. Her backhand side is equipped with red Dignics rubber, providing the necessary spin and control for her playing style.

Injury and Olympic Transition

The 2020 season saw interruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic and an elbow injury requiring surgery. After returning to training in January 2021, she participated in China's national team training camps. At the Tokyo Olympics, she partnered with Xu Xin to win a silver medal in the mixed doubles event, falling 4-3 to Japan's Mima Ito and Jun Mizutani after an initial 2-0 lead.

Post-Competitive Leadership

Following her active playing career, Liu transitioned into administrative roles within the sport. In December 2022, she was elected president of the FIBT Athletes' Commission for a four-year term. In April 2023, she assumed the position of vice-president of the Guangdong Provincial Ping Association.
