Liu Wang

Shenzhou 9 delivered Liu Wang to the Tiangong 1 space station during the first crewed mission to the orbital laboratory. Born in 1969 in Pingyao County, Shanxi, he transitioned from a military aviation background to the astronaut corps. His professional trajectory reflects the expansion of the Chinese space programme through the turn of the twenty-first century.

Military Foundations

Liu began his military training in 1988 at the PLA Air Force Aviation University. He developed skills as a fighter pilot within the People's Liberation Army Air Force. This foundational period in aircraft operations preceded his selection for the national space programme. His academic qualifications include studies at Beihang University, which supported his technical development.

Astronaut Selection

The recruitment of Liu into the astronaut programme occurred in 1998. His career path through the subsequent decade involved rigorous preparation for long-duration space missions under the Shenzhou program.

Shenzhou 9 Mission

In the mission to Tiangong 1, Liu served alongside Jing Haipeng and Liu Yang. This operation established critical precedents for Chinese space travel, specifically regarding station docking and habitation. The successful execution of the mission resulted in his receipt of the Spaceflight Exploit Medal in 2012, recognizing his contribution to the national space effort.
