The theme music for the television series Tatort, which premiered in 1970, remains one of the most recognizable compositions by German musician Klaus Doldinger. Throughout his career, he bridged the gap between traditional jazz performance and large-scale film scoring, establishing himself as a prolific artist who recorded over 2,000 individual musical pieces during his tenure in the industry.
Early Career and Jazz Foundations
Born in Berlin in 1936, Doldinger moved frequently during his youth, eventually settling in Düsseldorf. His formal training began at the Düsseldorf Conservatory in 1947, where he studied piano and later clarinet. By 1955, he was active in the jazz scene, playing with the band The Feetwarmers. His early success included forming Oscar’s Trio, which won the Coup Sidney Bechet at the Brussels jazz festival and led to performance invitations in the United States.

In 1971, Doldinger launched the jazz fusion group Passport. The ensemble achieved significant international recognition, touring extensively across Asia, Europe, and South America. Over three decades, the group underwent various changes in personnel, featuring musicians such as percussionist Udo Lindenberg and bassist Wolfgang Schmid. Their output exceeded 30 albums, blending jazz with rock and Latin influences. In 2021, the ensemble celebrated its history with the release of The First 50 Years Of Passport.
Film and Television Scores
Doldinger established a significant career as a film score composer, collaborating repeatedly with director Wolfgang Petersen. His work includes the scores for the 1981 film Das Boot and the 1984 production The NeverEnding Story. Beyond cinema, he composed themes for television programs including Ein Fall für Zwei, Liebling Kreuzberg, and Wolffs Revier. His expertise in composition also extended to commercial work, where he produced numerous jingles for brands such as Nescafé, Fa, and Pril.
Residency and Recognition
From 1968, Doldinger resided in Icking, where he operated his own private studio. He received numerous distinctions throughout his career, including the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art. In 2022, he published an autobiography titled Made in Germany. Doldinger passed away in Icking on 16 October 2025 at the age of 89.
