Early Career and Education
Born in 1959 in Sibiu, Iohannis pursued higher education at Babeș-Bolyai University, graduating in 1983. He spent several years as a physics teacher before entering educational administration. He served as the Deputy General School Inspector of Sibiu County from 1997 to 1999 and subsequently as the General School Inspector, overseeing the public school system in the region until his shift toward local government.

Iohannis entered electoral politics in 2000 as a candidate for the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania. Despite the diminishing size of the local German minority, he won the mayoralty of Sibiu, a position he held through successive re-elections in 2004, 2008, and 2012. His administration focused on infrastructure restoration and urban revitalization, which contributed to Sibiu being designated as the European Capital of Culture in 2007.
National Political Ascent
By 2009, Iohannis had emerged as a consensus candidate for Prime Minister among major parliamentary groups, though he was not appointed. He joined the National Liberal Party in 2013, quickly rising to become the party's president. He ascended to the presidency of Romania in 2014 and secured a second term in 2019, navigating the complexities of the National Coalition for Romania and various national political crises before leaving office in 2025.
