Klaus-Dietrich Flade

Soyuz TM-14 carried Klaus-Dietrich Flade to the Mir space station in March 1992, marking a significant milestone in German aerospace participation. A veteran of the German Air Force, his career bridges the transition from military aviation and engineering to international orbital research and modern commercial test piloting within the European aerospace industry.

Military and Academic Foundations

Born in 1952 in Büdesheim, Flade pursued a structured path through military and technical education. He attended the University of the Bundeswehr Munich between 1976 and 1980, focusing his studies on aerospace engineering. Following this academic phase, he transitioned into the German Air Force, where he developed the professional pilot skills that would eventually qualify him for specialized research roles.

Transition to Space Flight

Between 1988 and 1989, Flade underwent rigorous training to become a test pilot. His technical expertise made him a candidate for the Euromir '92 flight program. In October 1990, he was officially selected for the German astronaut team. After two years of intensive preparation, he achieved the rank of research cosmonaut and took part in the Soyuz TM-14 mission.

Orbital Mission and Professional Legacy

During his 1992 mission, Flade spent time aboard the Mir space station. His return to Earth concluded one week later aboard the Soyuz TM-13 craft. Following this mission, he returned to the German Air Force, eventually moving into his current role as a test pilot for Airbus Industrie. His contributions were formally acknowledged through the Order of Friendship of Peoples and the Medal For Merit in Space Exploration.
