Malaysian archer

A silver medal at the 2019 World Championships marked a milestone for Khairul Anuar Mohamad, as he became the first Malaysian archer to achieve such a status in the competition. This result also earned his nation a qualification spot for the 2020 Summer Olympics, underscoring his role in establishing Malaysia on the international archery circuit.

Early International Success

Born in Kemaman on 22 September 1991, Khairul began representing the Malaysian national team in 2011. During the 2011 FITA Archery World Cup Stage 4 in Shanghai, he became the first Malaysian to secure a medal at an individual World Cup event, finishing with silver after a loss to American Joe Fanchin. Later that year, at the Asian Archery Championships in Tehran, Iran, he claimed two gold medals. He defeated Japan’s Hideki Kikuchi in the individual final and participated in the team victory over China, which finished 187-184.

Olympic Appearances

Khairul competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in both individual and team events. He advanced to the quarter-finals of the individual competition before being eliminated by Takaharu Furukawa of Japan. In 2016, he qualified for the Summer Olympics by winning the Continental Quota Tournament in Bangkok. His 2016 campaign included a loss to Germany’s Florian Floto in the individual category and a defeat to the French team during the team event. He later returned to the Olympic stage for the 2020 Games, where he entered both the men's individual event and the mixed team event alongside Syaqiera Mashayikh.

Professional Recognition

The 2019 World Championships represented a peak in his career performance. In the final, he faced world number one Brady Ellison, with the match extending to a tie-break following five sets of play. Although he lost, the silver medal finish earned him a nomination for World Archery’s Male Athlete of the Year. In 2012, his contributions to the sport were acknowledged by the state of Terengganu, which awarded him the Meritorious Service Medal (PJK).
