Born in 1960 in Riyadh, Khalid A. Al-Falih established a long-term administrative career within the Saudi Arabian energy and political sectors. A graduate of Texas A&M University and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, he transitioned from a technical role at Saudi Aramco to leading the kingdom's major economic and ministerial portfolios over several decades.
Early Career at Saudi Aramco
Al-Falih began his tenure at Saudi Aramco in 1979. Over the following years, he ascended through various technical and managerial departments, including the Consulting Services Department and the Ras Tanura Refinery Maintenance Department. By 1999, he assumed the presidency of Petron Corporation, a joint venture. Upon returning to Saudi Arabia in 2000, he focused on gas venture development, playing a role in negotiations for the Natural Gas Initiative that established partnerships with multiple international oil companies.

Effective January 1, 2009, Al-Falih became the president and CEO of Saudi Aramco, succeeding Abdallah S. Jum'ah. During his tenure, he oversaw the Manifa project, which involved the construction of 27 man-made islands connected by 25 miles of causeways to tap oil reserves in the Persian Gulf. This project eventually reached a production capacity of 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Ministerial Roles and Investment
Al-Falih held numerous government positions, serving as Minister of Health from 2015 to 2016 and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources from 2016 to 2019. In 2016, his portfolio expanded to become the Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources. Following his departure from the energy ministry in 2019, he served as Minister of Investment from February 2020 until February 2026. In his investment role, he negotiated agreements, including significant infrastructure and telecommunications deals for Syria.
Professional Honors and Public Life
Beyond his government duties, Al-Falih maintained board memberships with various organizations, including the Dammam City Municipal Council and the U.S.-Saudi Arabian Business Council. He is a founding member of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. His professional recognition includes the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Texas A&M University, the 2016 Petroleum Executive of the Year, and the 2018 Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.
