Khaled Mashal, born in 1956 in the village of Silwad, emerged as a central figure in the Palestinian political landscape through his decades-long tenure within the Hamas organization. Based primarily in exile, he directed the group's external operations for over twenty years and remains a critical actor in its ongoing leadership structure following multiple regional conflicts.
Early Development and Education
Born into a farming family during the period of Jordanian rule over the West Bank, Mashal moved to Kuwait in 1957. He completed his secondary education there before enrolling at Kuwait University in 1974. During his university years, he became active in student politics, heading the Islamic Justice list and establishing the Islamic League for Palestinian Students. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physics in 1978 and taught the subject until 1984.

Mashal participated in the foundational discussions for the creation of Hamas during the early 1980s. Following the 1990 invasion of Kuwait, he relocated to Jordan. In 1996, he was elected chairman of the Hamas politburo. He consolidated his influence following the deaths of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi in 2004. Under his direction, the movement achieved a parliamentary majority in the 2006 Palestinian legislative election. He served as chief manager of the bureau until 2017, when he stepped down due to term limits.
1997 Assassination Attempt
In September 1997, Mossad agents operating in Amman attempted to kill Mashal using a fast-acting poison. His bodyguards apprehended two of the operatives, prompting a major diplomatic crisis between Jordan and Israel. King Hussein of Jordan conditioned the release of the detained agents on the provision of an antidote. Following intervention by U.S. President Bill Clinton, Israel provided the necessary medical treatment, which successfully saved Mashal's life.
Exile and Current Status
The organization's external leadership was expelled from Jordan in 1999. Since then, Mashal has operated from various locations in the Arab world. He has returned to acting leadership roles twice in 2024, following the deaths of his successors in the organization's high command. His career remains defined by his status as a key member of the external wing of the movement.
