Foundations and Early Filmmaking
Born in 1970 in Red Bank, New Jersey, Smith attended several educational institutions, including Henry Hudson Regional High School, Brookdale Community College, The New School, and a four-month stint at the Vancouver Film School. Inspired by Richard Linklater’s film Slacker, Smith returned to New Jersey to begin his career. He co-founded View Askew Productions with Scott Mosier to manage his projects. Following the success of his debut, he expanded his body of work with titles including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma. These films, often featuring the characters Jay and Silent Bob, form a shared narrative space known as the View Askewniverse.

Beyond his directorial work, Smith has maintained a career as a writer, producer, and actor. He appeared as a supporting actor in the 2007 film Live Free or Die Hard. His filmography as a director includes diverse genres such as the horror film Red State and the comedy-horror Tusk. Smith has also contributed significantly to television, directing episodes for The Flash, Supergirl, and The Goldbergs, while serving as creator for Clerks: The Animated Series and Masters of the Universe.
