Karim Matmour

Algerian and French footballer

Karim Matmour, born in Strasbourg on 25 June 1985, established a professional career as an association football player with extensive experience in German leagues. Beginning his development in his hometown, he transitioned to the German professional circuit in 2004, eventually competing for multiple clubs including SC Freiburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, and Adelaide United.

Early Career and SC Freiburg

Matmour started his football development with Vauban Strasbourg at age six before joining RC Strasbourg. After failing to break into the first team there and experiencing a rejection from Racing CFF, he returned to Vauban Strasbourg. In 2004, he moved to Germany to join SC Freiburg. He spent his initial season with the reserve side before debuting for the senior team on 28 January 2006 against Dynamo Dresden. Between 2005 and 2008, he made 79 league appearances for the club, recording goals against opponents such as Hansa Rostock, 1. FC Köln, and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Bundesliga Tenure

In June 2008, Matmour transferred to Borussia Mönchengladbach for a fee of €2 million, signing a four-year contract. He debuted in a DFB-Pokal victory over VfB Fichte Bielefeld and scored his first goal for the club against Werder Bremen in August 2008. Over his three years at Borussia Park, he navigated various injury challenges, including knee and thigh issues, and periods of fluctuating form. His tenure at the club included an appearance in a 2010 friendly victory against Liverpool.

International Competition

Matmour transitioned into international football in 2007. Throughout his career, he secured 30 international caps for his nation. He was a participant in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Over these international appearances, he recorded two goals.

Professional Path

Following his time at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Matmour continued his career with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he made 52 appearances and scored 7 goals. His subsequent stops included 1. FC Kaiserslautern, where he made 56 appearances with 5 goals, Al-Arabi, Huddersfield Town, 1860 Munich, and finally Adelaide United. He maintained an active playing career across these various international clubs.
