Early Career and Education
Before entering full-time politics, Keller-Sutter worked as an independent translator and conference interpreter, utilizing her multilingual proficiency in German, French, and English. Her academic background includes studies in political science in London and at the University of Montréal, followed by a post-graduate diploma in pedagogy from the University of Fribourg. She also spent time teaching at a vocational school.

Keller-Sutter joined the FDP in 1987. Her legislative career began in 1996 as a member of the Cantonal Council of St. Gallen, where she served until 2000. That year, she transitioned to the Regierungsrat of the canton of St. Gallen, focusing on security and justice. She held this post until 2012, including a term presiding over the cantonal government from 2006 to 2007.
Federal Legislative and Executive Service
After a failed bid for the Federal Council in 2010, she secured election to the Swiss Council of States in 2011, representing St. Gallen. She presided over this chamber between 2017 and 2018. In December 2018, she achieved election to the Swiss Federal Council with 154 votes. Her tenure as head of the Federal Department of Finance included involvement in the acquisition of Credit Suisse by UBS.
