Academic Foundations
Born in Helsinki in 1959, Jormakka moved to Lappeenranta for his childhood. He initially studied philosophy at the University of Helsinki before enrolling at the Helsinki University of Technology, where he graduated in 1985. He later earned a PhD in architecture theory from the Tampere University of Technology in 1992, with a thesis titled Constructing Architecture.

Jormakka focused on the ontology of architecture, arguing that constructed environments are essentially products of interpretation. He frequently critiqued the concept of Zeitgeist, drawing on the theories of Friedrich Hegel and Arthur C. Danto. His final publication, Eyes that do not see, released in 2011, applied these critical lenses to the history of Functionalism and the work of Le Corbusier.
Teaching and Legacy
Throughout his career, Jormakka held professorial and teaching positions at numerous institutions, including the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Ohio State University, and Harvard University. At the time of his death, he served as Professor of Architecture Theory at the Vienna University of Technology. In 2020, the University of Tampere published a Festschrift titled What, if anything, is a rabbit? to honor his impact.
