Kari Elizabeth Byron transitioned from the workshops of M5 Industries to a career as a science media personality and creator. Born in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1974, she established her professional identity through persistent hands-on engineering and later expanded into the production of educational streaming content for global audiences.
Early Education and Career Beginnings
Byron graduated from Los Gatos High School before attending San Francisco State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in film and sculpture in May 1998. Following graduation, she spent one year traveling through South Asia, participating in various artistic endeavors. Her entry into television was not planned; she sought employment at M5 Industries by frequently visiting Jamie Hyneman's workshop until she secured a role.

Beginning in 2004, Byron joined the cast of the Discovery Channel program MythBusters. As a member of the B Team alongside Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci, she tested the plausibility of various concepts alongside Adam Savage and Hyneman. Her role gained prominence in the show's second season. She remained with the series until 2014, while concurrently hosting projects such as Head Rush, Large, Dangerous Rocket Ships, and Punkin Chunkin. Later television work included the 2016 Netflix series White Rabbit Project, the 2021 Science Channel series Crash Test World, and the 2025 podcast Mythfits.
Artistic Practice and Education Advocacy
Outside of broadcasting, Byron maintains a practice as an artist and sculptor. Her work includes paintings produced through the ignition of gunpowder, a technique she also applied to the cover and interior art of the 2021 poetry collection canvas: poems. In 2018, she published her memoir, Crash Test Girl. Byron also co-founded EXPLR Media, a streaming service focused on education, with the specific intent of increasing representation for women in science media.
