Imane Khelif

Algerian boxer

The women's welterweight gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics was secured by Imane Khelif, a professional boxer from Algeria. Her journey to this international success began in the rural village of Biban Mesbah, where she eventually transitioned from football to boxing despite initial familial resistance to her involvement in the sport.

Early Development and Amateur Competition

Born in 1999 in Aïn Sidi Ali, Laghouat Province, Khelif grew up in Tiaret Province. During her youth, she navigated limited resources by selling bread and scrap metal to fund her training commute. She made her international debut at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. In 2020, she became the first female boxer to represent Algeria at the Summer Olympics, where she reached the quarterfinals.

Progression and Tournament Success

Throughout 2022, Khelif established herself as a top contender, winning gold at the Strandja Memorial Tournament, the Mediterranean Games, and the African Amateur Boxing Championships. She also earned a silver medal at the 2022 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships, marking the first time an Algerian female boxer reached a world final.

Disqualification and Regulatory Disputes

In March 2023, the IBA disqualified Khelif from their world championships before her final bout, citing unspecified eligibility failures. The IOC later described this decision as sudden and arbitrary. By 2025, new testing requirements introduced by World Boxing led to further administrative friction, and as of September 2025, Khelif’s appeal regarding these mandates remained active.

Olympic Achievement and Public Scrutiny

Following her 2024 Olympic victory, Khelif became the target of significant online controversy concerning her eligibility. She has consistently stated she was born female and has competed exclusively in women's events. In a February 2026 interview, she acknowledged possessing high testosterone levels, which she is managing under medical supervision, and expressed readiness to comply with IOC-mandated testing.
