Early Education and Academic Background
Born in 1989, Zhitomirskiy spent his early childhood in Moscow before his family moved to the United States. He graduated from Lower Merion High School in 2007, having previously attended Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. His higher education path was diverse, encompassing mathematics, economics, and computer science studies at Tulane University, the University of Maryland, and New York University. At the latter, he studied at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

During his time at the Courant Institute, Zhitomirskiy met the three co-founders of the Diaspora project. The group developed a social network designed to offer an alternative to centralized commercial services, focusing on user privacy. Inspired by a February 2010 lecture by Columbia Law School professor Eben Moglen, Zhitomirskiy prioritized the development of the free software underlying the network over completing his graduate studies.
Death and Legacy
On 12 November 2011, police discovered Zhitomirskiy deceased in his home in San Francisco. A medical examiner's report released in April 2012 confirmed the cause of death as suicide by inert gas asphyxiation. While observers linked the pressures of startup life to his personal challenges, others noted that his struggles were independent of his professional activities. His death was characterized as a major loss for the privacy-focused software movement.
