Recording over 1,200 songs during a career spanning more than five decades, Toshio Hayakawa, known professionally as Ichirō Mizuki, became the definitive voice for Japanese anime and tokusatsu themes. Born in Setagaya, Tokyo, in 1948, he established a prolific musical legacy that bridged the gap between television soundtracks, video games, and mainstream Japanese pop culture.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Mizuki began his formal career in 1968 after signing with the Nippon Columbia label. His debut single, Kimi ni sasageru Boku no Uta, marked the beginning of his tenure as a versatile artist. By 1971, his recording of Genshi Shōnen Ryū ga Yuku for the opening of Genshi Shōnen Ryū set the trajectory for his future output. Throughout the 1970s, his voice featured in numerous programs including Mazinger Z, Babel II, and Space Pirate Captain Harlock, earning him the title of the Emperor of Anime Songs.
Collaborations and Musical Leadership
Beyond his solo recordings, Mizuki shaped the industry through organizational roles. He managed the singing duo Apple Pie starting in 1990 and founded the supergroup JAM Project in 2000 alongside vocalists such as Hironobu Kageyama and Rica Matsumoto. He later transitioned to a part-time member of the group, which allowed for the addition of artists including Hiroshi Kitadani and Masami Okui. His later work included notable soundtracks for Juken Sentai Gekiranger and collaborations for various media.

Mizuki maintained an active presence in live-action and voice acting. He portrayed Dr. Ben in the series Jikuu Senshi Spielban and took on the role of Voicelugger Gold in the show Voicelugger. In the realm of voice acting, his credits ranged from the character Yoldo in the Dangaioh OVA to the villain Keisar Ephes in the Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 video game. He also made a guest appearance on the television program Gaki No Tsukai.
Final Years and Legacy
In 2016, Mizuki received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tokyo Anime Awards Festival, followed by the Tanita Health Award in 2020 for his contributions to Japanese public health. Despite being diagnosed with partial vocal cord paralysis in 2021 and subsequently lung cancer, which spread to his lymph nodes and brain in 2022, he remained focused on his 50th-anniversary industry celebrations. He died in Tokyo on December 6, 2022, at the age of 74.
