Early Career and Junior Success
Inspired by watching Haile Gebrselassie compete at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Ibrahim Jeilan began his international career at age 16. He claimed the silver medal in the 3000 metres at the 2005 World Youth Championships. By 2006, he secured the Ethiopian national title in the 10,000 metres and captured gold in the same event at the IAAF World Junior Championships. His junior years were also marked by a transition to cross country, where he helped the Ethiopian team earn silver at the 2006 World Cross Country Championships.

Following a difficult 2007 season, he rebounded in 2008 by winning the world junior cross country title and a silver medal at the African Championships. Despite consistent results in regional road races, such as the Giro di Castelbuono and the São Silvestre de Luanda, he moved to Saitama, Japan, in 2009 to join the Honda corporate running team under the guidance of coach Kiyoshi Akimoto.
The 2011 World Title and Subsequent Years
The 2011 World Championships in Daegu provided his most significant victory. Jeilan secured the gold medal in the 10,000 metres by overtaking Mo Farah in the final stages of the race. He reinforced this performance by winning another 10,000 metre gold at the 2011 All-Africa Games. Although injury prevented his participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics, he returned in 2013 to claim the 10,000 metre silver medal at the World Championships behind Farah.
