Born in Chuncheon on 26 January 1996, Hwang Hee-chan developed into a professional footballer known for an aggressive playing style that earned him the nickname Hwangso, or bull. A forward by trade, he rose through the South Korean youth system before pursuing a European career that spanned leagues in Austria, Germany, and England.
Early Development in South Korea
Hwang’s formal football education began at Uijeongbu Singok Elementary School. In 2008, he topped the scoring charts in the Hwarangdaegi Tournament and the Dongwon Youth Cup, later securing a record 22 goals at the Kanga Cup. His youth success led to the Cha Bum-kun Football Award. At Pohang Jecheol Middle School and subsequently Pohang Jecheol High School, he emerged as a consistent threat, winning the MVP award in the 2011 Korean National School League and later guiding his school team to a title in the 2013 K League Junior with 12 goals in 12 games.

Despite interest from Pohang Steelers in 2014, Hwang moved to Austria to join Red Bull Salzburg. His tenure included a significant 2017–18 Europa League campaign, where he scored against Lazio in the quarter-finals. The 2019–20 season proved particularly productive as he registered 16 goals and 22 assists across 40 appearances, often playing alongside Erling Haaland and Takumi Minamino. Following a loan spell at Hamburger SV in 2018, he moved to RB Leipzig in 2020 on a five-year contract, where he contributed to the team's 2021 DFB-Pokal Final run.
Premier League Tenure
Hwang joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021 on a season-long loan, scoring on his debut against Watford. His permanent move was finalized in 2022 with a contract extending to 2026. He demonstrated notable scoring form, including a decisive goal against Manchester City in September 2023. By late 2023, he became the third Wolves player to record at least 10 Premier League goals in a single season. In September 2026, he moved to the Bundesliga club Schalke 04 on a season-long loan.
International Representation
Hwang has represented South Korea across multiple age brackets. He was the top scorer in the 2012 AFC U-16 Championship and participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics, where he scored against Germany. In the 2018 Asian Games, he scored the winning goal in a 2–1 final against Japan, an achievement that secured him an exemption from mandatory military service.
