Eddie Vedder, born Edward Louis Severson III in 1964, emerged from the music scene as a defining voice in rock. Best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist for Pearl Jam, his career began through a demo tape sent to Seattle musicians, which laid the groundwork for his entry into the project Temple of the Dog.
Early Life and Education
Raised in Evanston, Illinois, and later moving to California, he developed an interest in music during his youth. He attended San Dieguito High School Academy and later earned his high school GED from Oakton Community College. He worked various jobs, including time as a night clerk and security guard, while playing in bands such as Bad Radio and Indian Style.

In 1990, he received a demo tape from a Seattle band seeking a singer. He recorded lyrics for songs that would become Pearl Jam tracks, including 'Alive' and 'Once'. His talent caught the attention of Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, leading to his participation in the Temple of the Dog project, a tribute to Andrew Wood, where he performed a notable duet with Chris Cornell on 'Hunger Strike'.
Pearl Jam and Solo Work
Formed in 1990, Pearl Jam rose to prominence with their debut album, Ten, which became one of the most successful records of the 1990s. Beyond his role in the band, he has pursued solo efforts, including the soundtrack for the film Into the Wild in 2007 and his 2022 album Earthling. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
