The Reök Palace in Szeged stands as the defining monument of Ede Magyar, an architect whose career spanned little more than a decade. Born Ede Oszadszki in Orosháza on 31 January 1877, he officially adopted the surname Magyar three years later. His body of work remains centered primarily within the city of Szeged, reflecting a distinct organic design language.
Professional Formation
Magyar grew up as the son of cabinet maker Mihály Oszadszki. His architectural training took place in Budapest, where he qualified as a master builder in 1901. Following his initial education, he undertook further studies abroad, gaining exposure to architectural trends that eventually informed his unique creative output upon his return to Hungary.

The architect concentrated his practice in Szeged, resulting in a dense collection of structures that define the local urban landscape. Among these are the Schaffer House, completed in 1904, and the prominent Reök Palace, which he finished in 1907. Other significant projects in the city include the Reformed Palace, the Burghardt House, and the Unger-Mayer House, the latter dating to 1911.
Regional Contributions
Beyond his primary base in Szeged, Magyar executed designs across several regional hubs. In 1910, he completed the Simon Palace in Hódmezővásárhely. His work in Zenta included the 1910 Rottmann House and the 1911 Royal Hotel. Additionally, he collaborated with József Stahl on two major theatre projects in 1911: the theatre in Kaposvár and the Gergely Csiky Theatre.
Final Years
Magyar ended his life prematurely on 5 May 1912 at the age of 35, following a period of personal distress related to his romantic life. He was interred at the Dugonics Cemetery.
