Eddie Irvine

The 1993 Japanese Grand Prix marked the Formula One debut of Eddie Irvine, who secured sixth place and a single championship point. The race is remembered for his decision to unlap himself against Ayrton Senna, an maneuver that triggered a heated post-race physical altercation between the two drivers and led to a suspended ban for the Brazilian champion.

Early Racing Years

Born in Newtownards in 1965, Irvine attended Regent House Grammar School before entering motorsport. His early training took place within the Formula Ford circuit, where he earned a victory at Brands Hatch in 1984. By 1987, he moved to the Van Diemen team, winning the Esso and RAC Formula Ford series alongside the Formula Ford Festival. Following a test organized by Marlboro, he transitioned to the British Formula 3 Championship in 1988.

Formula 3000 and Le Mans

In 1989, Irvine competed in the International Formula 3000 Championship with Pacific Racing, finishing ninth. He moved to the Jordan Formula 3000 team in 1990, securing third in the standings. Subsequently, he relocated to Japan to race in the national championship for Cerumo Racing, where he won one race. During this period, he also participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, achieving a second-place class finish in 1992 and repeating this success in 1994.

Formula One Entry and Controversy

Irvine joined Jordan Grand Prix for the 1993 season. Later that year, he received a warning regarding his Super Licence after an accident involving Damon Hill at the Portuguese Grand Prix. Despite these setbacks, he continued to compete in Formula One, finishing the 1994 season with six points.
